Peter Young American (b. 1940) born Pittsburgh, PA Born in 1940 in Pittsburgh, Young grew up in Los Angeles, studied at Pomona College for two years, and moved to New York in 1960. He worked briefly at the Art Student's League with Theodoros Stamos, and studied art history at New York University. Young began painting seriously in 1963, and by 1967 had developed his "dot" style of painting. Despite the relatively meticulous nature of these works Young was very productive and exhibted widely; in New York at Leo Castelli and Noah Goldowsky/Richard Bellamy galleries, and at Nicholas Wilder Gallery, Los Angeles and Galerie Ricke in Cologne, Germany. Young was the subject of the cover article in Artforum, April 1971, and his work was included in group exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (1969) and the Guggenheim Museum. His paintings are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Saint Louis Museum of Art and Neuberger Museum of Art, amongst others. |
