Ad Reinhardt

American (1913-1967)
born Buffalo, NY

Ad Reinhardt studied at Columbia University, the National Academy of Design and later at the American's Artist's School. His style was abstract from early on (he was a member of the American Abstract Artist's Group from 1937-47), although it changed from a geometric abstraction in the 1930s, to an abstract expressionist style in the 1940s. By the 1950s he had developed his mature style (as represented in this print), which, despite his friendship with members of the Abstract Expressionist circle and frequent association with that group, really looks forward more to the simple or austere Minimalist works of the 1960s. His paintings became gradually darker, until, with near imperceptible differences between dark purple, dark green and black, for example, they almost resembled monochromatic works.
